Healing, medical advice & medical stories that the doctors may not tell you!

Doctors AdviceWelcome to blog. My name is Maria, and I’m a forty year old wife, and mom of two boys, ages ten and seven years. Forty snuck up on me like a thief in the night....one day I was having a blast in my twenties, and suddenly I find myself highlighting my hair to cover the gray that is so determined to take over my natural color - like weeds in a garden. And my body, well, it’s been through more in the past forty years, than most people go through in a lifetime.

But, I am a different person for it all: I am medically wiser, a more compassionate person towards others who suffer with medical problems, and I have become a pro, so-to-speak, when it comes to communicating with doctors and their medical staff. I have found my voice when it comes to my body. And I know how to be an active part of my own healing, both emotionally and physically. It has taken years to get to this point, because even growing up with my father as a physician, and my mother a nurse, I never realized how important of a role we play in our own healthcare. And we do.

Just because they are the doctor, the professional, I have come to realize that their degree on the wall doesn’t mean that they don’t make mistakes, miss things, overlook things, or simply do not have all the answers. True, it is their job, to get to the bottom of our problems and medically treat our problems, but they need us, in order for them to do it effectively and successfully.

Follow my website, and you will hear a tale of all medical tales - how I overcame some of the most unusual medical problems, how I learned to use my voice in my own healing, and how you can too.

Thank you for visiting,

Maria

Unfortunately Another Surgery is Coming to The Family

It is pretty certain that my oldest son is going to need surgery on his eye to correct his esotropia.  To correct it surgically, they will need to go in and repair the eye that is drifting, which is his right eye.  When my son reads, his right eye tends to drift in, and almost cross, while he is reading.  In order for the eyes to not send a "crossed-eye" message to the brain, the brain essentially shuts down his right eye, so that he is basically only seeing through his left.  His right eye doesn't go black in totally darkness, it just sits there, almost dormant, until he looks up and straight ahead again, then his vision returns fully in both eyes.

This problems also causes him to not have good 3-D vsision.  He will be able to drive and do normal activities, but in a sense, his depth perception is affected.  This causes him to fall more than a boy his age should be falling.  The doctor has ordered him to use over-the-counter reading glasses, the strongest there is, when he reads.  If this helps him, then she will know that the surgery will also benefit him, so they will go ahead with it.  If the glasses do not help him over this next six weeks, then she'll know that to do surgery wouldn't help.  I don't fully understand the connection, but she is the doctor.

I feel fortunate for him only having one eye affected by this.  Some children are born with both eyes having Esotropia, and to really bad degrees, too.  But when it is your child, even one eye can be bad enough.  You don't want to ever see them struggle with anything, or complain about headaches, or their eyes being tired.  Especially when your child likes to read as much as mine.

I will keep my readers updated on whether or not he is going to be a candidate for this surgery or not, and if so, when it will be.

Unfortunately, Some Companies Take Advantage of Their Customers

Going Back to School

I decided to take a leap of faith and go back to school.  I am taking an online course for medical insurance billing that will take me a year to complete but I am hoping that at the end of the year, I will be prepared to start m own business.  I plan on continuing to freelance write, but I want to also have a steady flow of income that I can count on.

Working in the medical field for so many years, years ago, I have a natural ability toward this field and hope that I will also have a natural ability to run my own business.  I am excited, though it has been hard getting into the swing of studying again.  With my brain problems and short-term memory problems, it has already proven to be a challenge to remember what I read an retain information.

I also think it will be good for my brain to have to remember new things.  I hope it will help re-train it to remember, and strengthen my short-term memory.  I will keep everyone updated on how my studies go.

Speak Your Mind With Your Doctor

Many people dread going to their doctor because they are afraid.  What could anyone be afraid of with the doctor? you might ask.  But believe it or not, there is a lot to be afraid of.  Being afraid doesn't necessarily mean you are afraid of the doctor himself, but it can be more of a fear of how to talk to your doctor.  Many people put physicians up on a pedestal and and think of them being above them.  The truth is, doctors are just like us.  They get up and put their pants on one leg at a time just like us.  The are people, they make mistakes, they have bills to pay, and most of them have their own families they have to take care of.

You should feel comfortable talking to yaour doctor.  You shouldn't fear their reaction to any news you have to give them.  You should feel that you can be honest with them and ask them questions, no matter how embarrassing.  More times than not, they have probably heard your same concerns from someone else.  As a matter-of-fact, there is probably not much that your doctor hasn't heard before in his practice; from the rare, to the very rarest of circumstances.

If you have a list of things you want to ask him and think you may get flustered when you see him, write it all down.  Make a list and take it with you, this way you won't get tripped up or forget anything.  If you do not agree with your doctor about your treatment plan he offers, let him know.  Never be afraid to be honest with your doctor.

It is very important that you play an active role in your own medical care.  If you are not your own advocate, there is no one else who will be.  If you do not like the way your physician handles your case, don't be afraid to let him know, and do not be afraid to fire him as your physician and find another one.  There are lots of doctors out there, and there is one who is matched for you.

A Request From My Readers

As some may know by now, I am a freelance writer.  I write fiction, non-fiction, articles; I have written a couple of children's books which I am now, again, looking into to get published.  I have started two novels, I am working on my auto-biography, and am currently writing articles for web content.  I work from home.  I would love to get more work.  I would love to make this a full time career for myself, and now, more than ever.   I need to find a longterm position, or a more permanent writing position with a permanent salary, and if possible, benefits.  There are personal reasons involved, so I would appreciate any leads anyone can give me.  It is very important that I be able to work from home, due to my medical problems, and if anyone has any kind of lead for anything that I can work at home for, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks so much....Maria
